a work in Progress

me, the woman named Progress

hey and welcome!

If you made it to this page I’m sure you’re a little curious to know who I am, so let’s get right to it.

My first name is Progress-Jehosheba (yes I’m a two first name girly, shout out to us!). Combined my first names mean “God has sworn to give me progress” so a work in progress is greater than something I became, it's who I am. I’m well aware my name is a word, and yes I have heard ALL the jokes. Jehosheba is the name of a King’s daughter included in the Bible, and if you’re interested to learn more check out 2 Kings 11.

I was named by my father, a father who is no longer in my life. I include this because most people assume my mom picked my name and express such extreme shock when I say otherwise. If my mom had it her way my first name would be Jubilee. And while there is nothing wrong with that name, I think Progress suits me a tad bit better. So yes, my very absent father picked a pretty incredible name for me, and for that I thank him. His lack of presence also sparked my family of three to move from Atlanta, Georgia to Charlotte, North Carolina when I was seven. There we spent many amazing years under the roof of my second parents (my aunt and uncle) and their five children and for that, I am eternally grateful.

Raised in a Nigerian household, I had the pleasure of experiencing American culture as a black woman (pretty terrifying right) but also operating as full Christian African off school grounds. And as the daughter of former pastors and church planters, let’s just say heavy on the Christian. My brother and I were born in The States and we do not have the pleasure of knowing how to fully speak our native language. Due to the advice of our primary care doctor, we didn’t learn Ibibio (our native language) because the doctor claimed it would impede our ability to learn English (we now know that to be a big, fat lie).

Here I am, a 25-year-old woman who graduated from Wingate University with a bachelor's in science majoring in Biology and minors in both Chemistry and English. Then May 2023 I concentrated on Epidemiology and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a Master's in Public Health. I desire a job that allows me to pursue my three loves- science, health, and writing but also gives me the flexibility to live my now more fully and authentically express myself.

If I’m being 100% honest writing this short bio has been the hardest part of creating this entire website. I could not quite figure out what parts of myself I am ready to share and what is deemed “worthy” of sharing in the eyes of others.

A simple revelation proved to be very healing for me, “ all of life is progress”. I say this because I found myself striving toward progress regularly, and for quite some time I convinced myself that the opposite of progress is stagnation. I am Progress so my only choice is to progress. But progress takes shape in a multitude of forms because we are all works in progress and we are all uniquely different. And that’s what I plan on showcasing here– me the woman named Progress being a work in progress.

Oh! I forgot to mention my older brother, whom I love dearly, is named Victory, and just maybe his name inspired my parents to name me Progress. Anyway, please enjoy, stay a little, and thank you for stopping by:)
